TEHRAN – MP Alireza Zakani on Sunday stated that principlist camp favors a consensus on the candidacy of the incumbent President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad.

Zakani who is the secretary general of Followers of Islamic Revolution Society said principlists believe if they agree on Ahmadinejad they have more chances of winning the contest.
Zakani pointed out that the society members have not met Ahmadinejad to announce support for him yet, but principlists believe that unity is the key factor to win the June presidential election.
He noted that Khatami’s candidacy has caused unity among conservative politicians and made a consensus on Ahmadinejad more likely.
He also said the society supports Ahmadinejad because he is faithful to the values of the Islamic Revolution and his administration has been engaged in activities that the previous administrations “did not dare to”.
Commenting on the possible candidacy of Tehran Mayor Mohammad-Baqer Qalibaf, Zakani said the mayor had said he will not contest the votes if Khatami or former prime minister Mir Hossein Mousavi run for president.
Asked is it possible that both Qalibaf and Ahmadinejad contest the elections in the conservative camp, Zakani said Qalibaf seeks unity among principlists and currently the camp supports Ahmadinejad’s candidacy
